Whether your birth is hard or easy, the first few
days with your new baby will probably be a blur of snuggling, napping, and
getting to know each other. It takes a lot of energy to care for a brand-new
person, and one of your biggest responsibilities as a new mom is making sure
your baby gets enough to eat.
Your Birth
You will be confident knowing you made the right
choices for you and your baby. To ensure that you and your baby have a
wonderful experience the hospital, spend some time gathering information and
resources about your options before you make any decisions.
Your Birth Plan
Once you’ve selected your helath care provider and
your hospital, it’s time to let them know exactly what you want regarding your
birth, your baby and breastfeeding.
Complete the plan with your family and share it with
your doctor, your baby’s doctor, and other hospital staff
Breastfeed Right After the Birth
Breastfeeding is an important part of the birth.
Begin breastfeeding your baby within an hour following the birth if possible
and continue to feed your baby on demand throughout the first 24 hours. Early,
frequent, unrestricted breastfeeding offers health benefits to you and your
baby while preventing common breastfeeding difficulties. Be patient. Your baby
will feed any were from 8-12 times in a 24 hour period, some will nurse more,
others may need to be gently awakened.
